The lifestyle of a professional musician comes with a degree of freedom, but it can also come with much stress and a hectic schedule. Depending on what kind of musicians one is, often musicians fill in many roles by themselves like marketing, booking gigs, practicing daily, events, etc. Therefore, the average person can learn a lot from the time management skills of successful professional musicians. Here are three daily habits of a serious musician:

Schedule Creative Time

Some may say that creativity should be spontaneous, and musicians can use this impulsivity to create some of their best music and ideas.  While this may be true for some musicians, it is just as valid and probably more successful to schedule opportunities to create music. By scheduling time to compose and make music, you are training your creative muscles to engage daily or weekly basis. The best way to create music is to spend time creating it. By scheduling time for yourself to make music, you are setting yourself up for success.

Listen to Music Everyday

Listening to music, even new music, every day is a daily habit a good musician has. New sounds can not only inspire you, but they will also help you train your ears, expand your genres, give you new ideas, and so much more.  Even more than that, listening to new music is just fun! After all, musicians were interested in their instrument because it brought them joy and fun, right? Listening to new music could help you develop a new melody or chord progression that inspires a new original song. Or maybe you hear a riff that you want to learn, and you spend time expanding your skills. Overall, you never know what will happen when you start listening to new music. A great way to practice listening to new music is by listening to an artist you have never heard of or a genre you have never explored. Another great exercise is to go on YouTube or Spotify of new music and press shuffle. Listen to each song in order, and then try to play along with the music as it plays. With this exercise, you practice ear training and intuitive learning skills, and you listen to an entire playlist of music that is probably new to your ears!

Take Time to Reflect

Something every great musician does is take time to reflect on their goals and their progress. If they aren’t meeting their goals, they will revise their plans. A great way to begin doing this is by doing it weekly or monthly basis. Ask yourself these questions: How am I doing with my goals? Do I have a balanced and realistic schedule I can follow? Do I feel satisfied with my creativity? Am I confident with your technical progress? Am I taking the time to listen to new music, go to shows at music venues, and spending time with other musicians?  Asking yourself these questions can help you check your progress and how you feel about these critical aspects of your journey as a musician.
