You get an 88-key weighted keyboard, expressive piano sound, built-in speakers, headphones capability, and a compact design. But the FP-40 also introduces built-in Wi-Fi and direct integration with Roland's Piano Sphere app, giving players another way to find music, receive guidance, track progress, and keep moving forward.

Piano Reality Sound with a More Powerful Speaker System

The FP-40 uses Roland's Piano Reality Sound Engine, combining sampled piano sounds with selected modeling technologies. The goal is to reproduce more of the decay, resonance, tonal variation, and dynamic response associated with an acoustic piano.

That sound comes through a newly engineered speaker system with two 8 x 12 cm speakers and 12 watts of amplification per side. Roland designed the new speaker layout to add depth and richness in the lower register while maintaining clarity throughout the instrument.

There is also plenty of room to explore beyond acoustic piano sounds. The FP-40 contains 305 internal tones, with 40 accessible directly from the instrument and another 265 available through the Roland Piano App.

An 88-Key Action You Can Develop On

Sound matters, but your connection to a piano begins at the keyboard.

Roland equips the FP-40 with its PHA-4 Standard Keyboard, an 88-key weighted hammer action with escapement, Ivory Feel key surfaces, and triple-sensor detection. The triple-sensor system allows faster and more accurate detection during repeated notes, an important detail as technique and repertoire become more demanding.

For a developing pianist, that means the FP-40 is not simply about getting 88 weighted keys into the house. Its keyboard is designed to give the player meaningful control over dynamics, articulation, and expression as their skills develop.

And because the action is paired with adjustable touch sensitivity, players can choose among five response settings or a fixed-touch setting.

Meet Piano Sphere

One of the biggest additions to the FP-40 is Piano Sphere, a learning app developed with Skoove and integrated directly with the instrument.

The app offers personalized guidance, real-time feedback, step-by-step learning, progress tools, and song-based practice. The FP-40 even includes a dedicated Piano Sphere button that lights to provide immediate feedback while you play.

Access to Piano Sphere includes 100 songs plus three guided courses ranging from beginner through advanced, with material covering areas such as technique, theory, and sight-reading. Roland states that this included experience does not require an ongoing subscription. Players who want a larger library can optionally upgrade for access to more than 1,000 songs and lessons.

For many students, especially those who sometimes struggle with deciding what to practice, that can be as useful as adding another sound or technical feature. The piano becomes a place to explore, work toward a goal, and see progress accumulating over time.

Built for Modern Practice, Lessons, and Music Making

The FP-40 works just as well when you want technology to get out of the way.

Its interface is intentionally straightforward, while Bluetooth Audio/MIDI and USB-C make it easier to connect phones, tablets, and computers. The USB-C Mobile/PC connection supports USB MIDI and audio and can provide power to compatible USB Power Delivery smartphones.

Plug in headphones and you can practice privately without filling the house with scales at night. Piano Reality Headphones Ambience is included for a more immersive headphone experience.

The FP-40 also supports a headset microphone, opening up a simpler setup for online lessons, streaming, and video creation. Standard MIDI file recording and playback are available as well, along with WAV and MP3 playback from a compatible USB flash drive.

Portable When You Need It, Furniture-Style When You Don't

At 51-1/2 inches wide, 13-1/8 inches deep, and 4-13/16 inches high without the music rest, the FP-40 keeps a relatively shallow footprint. With the music rest attached, the piano weighs 30 lbs. 14 oz.

That gives families flexibility. Keep it on a compatible portable keyboard stand when mobility matters, or add Roland's optional KSF-40 dedicated stand and KPD-70 three-pedal board for a more permanent home-piano setup.

The FP-40 is available in black or white, making it easier to choose a version that works naturally in your space.
