The Real Risks of Not Using Professional Piano Movers

Fallen piano when leg broke during a move
This customer’s piano leg broke when they tried to do a DIY move in their own home.

Choosing non-specialized movers or attempting a DIY move can lead to serious, often irreversible problems. Pianos are top-heavy and fragile; even a minor mishap can cause major issues. Common consequences we’ve seen from improper handling include:

  • Severe Damage from Falls or Drops: If a piano tips, slips, or falls during the move—especially on stairs, ramps, or uneven surfaces—it can result in cracked cases, broken legs, damaged soundboards, or shattered internal components. These structural breaks often make the instrument unplayable and require extensive, expensive repairs. We’ve even seen instruments that were totaled as a result of a tip or fall.
  • Injury to People Involved: Pianos can weigh 300-1,200 pounds. Without proper technique or equipment, movers risk serious back strains, muscle pulls, crushed fingers, or worse. Professional training and tools eliminate these hazards.
  • Scratches, Dents, and Finish Damage: Bumping into walls, door frames, or furniture can chip the exterior finish, dent the wood, or cause visible scratches. Our team will ensure all protective measures are taken to minimize those risks.
  • Internal Mechanical Issues: Often, during a move, important internal mechanisms may shift. Wooden rods attached to the pedals may come loose or the pitman might come unseated. Because of the specialized training our team has, we’re qualified to manage these issues on site, saving the extra expense and inconvenience of avoidable piano service calls.

Miller Piano Specialists 5-Star Piano Moving Review

  • Avatar Gary Thielman ★★★★★ 7 months ago
Tried to save money and set my grand piano up myself with two other people none of which ever did it before. If you are ever thinking about doing this DON"T DO IT! Get professionals to do it. During our attempt the rear leg broke right off and the piano crashed to the floor. After freaking out and getting the piano back up on the dolly, I called Miller Piano Specialists for advice. They knew exactly what happened and were incredibly helpful. I sent pictures of the broken leg and they immediately knew it could be repaired and that they would be able to come out and set up my piano 50 miles away. About 10 days after dropping the leg off at their showroom, they came out with a completely repaired leg (a beautiful job) and in short order had my piano set up and ready to go. My 91 year old beauty was never so happy. I highly recommend them. Professional, reasonable pricing and they did exactly what they said they would do. A job well done guys. Thank you!

Fortunately, nobody was hurt (other than maybe some pride), though the piano and the owner’s floor both sustained damage.

By choosing Miller Piano Specialists for piano delivery or piano moving in the Nashville area, you avoid these risks entirely. Our insured, bonded team handles everything professionally, so your piano—and your property—stay protected.

Post Piano Delivery Service

Once your piano is moved to it’s new home, it needs to acclimate to the new environment. Allow the piano to settle for 4-6 weeks.

During this time, you may notice the piano going out of tune, keys sticking, even squeaks or odd buzzes. This is all a natural part of the settling process.

Once the piano has settled, it’s best to have it tuned and regulated. Miller Piano Specialists has full-time, on-staff piano technicians to manage your tuning and regulation needs, including fixing those odd squeaks or buzzes.

Nashville Piano Moving FAQs

How much does piano moving cost in Middle Tennessee?

Due to the specifics of each move, piano moving costs vary depending on piano type, distance, stairs, access, and complexity.

Base rates within 35 miles of our Nashville showroom:
– Upright piano move: starting at $250
– Grand piano move: starting at $350

These include up to 4 external steps, main floor, and no tight turns or narrow hallways inside that may require special navigation. Contact us for an accurate quote based on your specific situation.

What should I do to prepare my home for a piano move

Your piano movers or piano delivery team will need a clear path for whichever piano is being moved. The area the piano is going to be set up in should be free from obstructions. If you can move rugs, door mats, or other floor coverings that have a tendency to “bunch up” when the piano dolly rolls across it, that’s helpful.

For the area the piano will go to, on most upright piano, if you can clear a spot that’s 4′ deep and 8′-9′ wide, that will give the piano movers an adequate amount of room to work as they lift the piano off the moving dolly. For a grand piano, 3′ to 4′ on each end of the piano is best, and for the area the piano will be set down from the grand board, 7′-8′ is generally sufficient.

What questions to ask piano movers?

The main questions to ask to see if you’re hiring a professional piano mover are:

Are they insured? Do they have specialized piano moving equipment (e.g. dollies, grand boards, straps, van/trailer tie-downs, ramps, etc.)? What training have they received? Do they have repair facilities to service the instrument in the event something does go wrong? How many pianos do they move each year? (above 100 is generally a good litmus test for a professional piano mover) What is their damage frequency?

There are other questions you can ask, too. Don’t be shy! Your piano is an important, so you should be comfortable with whomever you choose to move it.

Is it safe to move a piano myself?

If your piano needs moved inside your home, it may be OK to do it yourself. Moving an upright piano on a carpeted floor is generally OK. It’s definitely a 2-person job, and if your piano has front legs with casters attached to the legs, make sure you take the weight off those legs or risk breaking them. If your home has hardwood floors, or if you’re moving a grand piano – always hire professionals. Also, if you’re moving your piano to a different address, we recommend you hire professionals. Damage to the instrument, your home, or to the people moving the instrument is much more likely when you attempt a DIY piano move. The cost of professional piano movers is much less than a costly repair or somebody getting hurt.
