These guys were so helpful! I called to inquire about a custom/retrofit muffler/practice rail for my upright piano and they … More couldn’t have been kinder. I spoke to someone named Forrest and he was super knowledgeable and answered all my questions. I will be going back to them for anything piano related in the future!

Travis and his sons were about as nice as you can get in helping me this week pick out a new digital piano. Extremely knowledgeable … More and was very gracious in helping me figure out how to pack it into my small car, haha. I would absolutely recommend these guys if you are looking for a new piano. -Michael

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a piano tuning take?

A standard piano tuning takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. If your piano is significantly flat or sharp, it may require several passes to restore pitch and tuning stability (often called a “rough tune” or “pitch raise”). This can take 2 to 3 hours.

My piano has not been tuned in years. Is that OK?

Yes, though it may need some extra attention. A piano not tuned in years has likely fallen significantly out of tune. At your visit, we will check the piano’s condition and pitch and confirm what is needed to get it back to proper pitch and may incur additional costs.

We just moved. When should we have our piano tuned?

Plan to have your piano tuned about 4-6 weeks after a move. This allows time for the instrument to adjust to its new environment, including changes in temperature and humidity. Tuning too soon can cause it to drift quickly, while waiting too long can let it fall further out of tune and require extra work to bring it back.

How do I pay?

You can pay your technician directly by cash or check, or we can email an invoice payable online by card, ACH, PayPal, or Venmo.

Why do I need to have my piano tuned?

Regular piano tuning preserves your instrument’s condition and keeps every note sounding as it should. Temperature, humidity, and use all cause the piano to drift out of tune. A properly tuned piano responds better and is simply more enjoyable to play!

How often should I have my piano tuned?

In Middle Tennessee, plan to have your piano tuned at least twice per year – usually in spring and fall when the weather shifts. A good rule of thumb is to schedule a tuning when you switch your home’s system from heat to air conditioning or vice versa.

At minimum, tune once a year to maintain sound quality and prevent extra wear. Heavy use, recent moves, or wide humidity swings may call for more frequent visits.

Can older pianos be tuned?

Yes, most older pianos can be tuned. However, age and condition play a big role in whether a piano can safely hold pitch. Some vintage or older instruments may have structural or mechanical issues, such as loose tuning pins or a weakened soundboard, that make tuning risky or short-lived.

Before tuning, our technician will assess your piano’s condition to ensure it can be tuned safely and reliably. If any concerns arise, we’ll explain your options clearly before proceeding. Keep in mind that older pianos often require more time and care to bring back to pitch, so the cost may be slightly higher than a standard tuning.

Can I tune my own piano?

We don’t recommend it. Piano tuning is a highly specialized skill that requires professional tools, training, and experience. Unlike tuning a guitar or other stringed instrument, tuning a piano involves adjusting over 200 strings under very high tension. Attempting to tune your own piano without proper knowledge can lead to damage and costly repairs. For the best results, always hire a qualified piano technician or tuner.

What causes a piano to go out of tune?

Pianos are complex, sensitive instruments made primarily of wood and metal, materials that constantly respond to temperature and humidity changes. As these materials expand and contract, the tension on the strings shifts, causing the piano to go out of tune.

Each string is held under hundreds of pounds of tension, and together, a piano carries over 20 tons of pressure across its frame. Regular tuning not only keeps your piano sounding great and enjoyable to play, but also helps maintain its structural integrity and prevents long-term damage from uneven tension.
