Yamaha U7 VT 52" Upright Piano

The Yamaha U7 represents a particularly interesting chapter in Yamaha's piano-making history. Developed as the company's flagship upright piano, the U7 occupied a position above even the premium U5 series, incorporating more sophisticated construction and higher-grade components than Yamaha's conventional upright models.

Built in Japan during an era when Yamaha was refining its professional piano designs, the U7 was intended for pianists seeking the company's highest level of upright piano construction. Today, these instruments remain an interesting alternative to the more familiar Yamaha U1 and U3 models, particularly for players who appreciate the engineering and character of Yamaha's earlier premium instruments.

One of the U7's most distinctive technical features is its full-range agraffe system. More commonly associated with grand pianos, agraffes are precision metal guides that establish the position and speaking length of the strings. Yamaha's decision to incorporate them throughout the U7's string scale reflects the attention given to this model's acoustic design.

At 52" tall, the U7 is a full-size professional upright, with the longer strings and larger soundboard area that make taller uprights particularly attractive to serious pianists. Its substantial construction offers the acoustic potential for satisfying bass development, resonance, and dynamic expression, all within the comparatively compact footprint of an upright piano.

Another thoughtful performance feature is the full sostenuto pedal. Unlike the practice mute commonly found on upright pianos, the sostenuto allows selected notes to sustain independently while other notes remain unaffected. It's a valuable feature for pianists exploring more advanced repertoire and pedal techniques.

The teak finish is another reason this particular U7 VT stands out. Its natural wood appearance offers a refreshing alternative to traditional polished ebony, bringing warmth and character to the cabinet without sacrificing the instrument's professional appearance. It's a distinctive look that feels equally appropriate in a living room or dedicated teaching studio.

For an advancing student, experienced pianist, or someone who appreciates vintage Yamaha craftsmanship, the U7 offers something beyond the usual professional upright. Its flagship heritage, unusual construction details, and handsome teak cabinetry make it a piano worth experiencing in person.
