Is technique important when playing the piano? The answer is yes! Although great technique on the piano may be challenging to develop, it will take your piano playing to the next level. Once you get in the groove, have great posture, breathing, and feel relaxed, you’ll never look back. Here’s why piano playing technique is so important:

What Does Proper Piano Technique Mean?

So firstly, what does the proper piano technique even mean? Understanding the piano technique means understanding the best way to hold your hands, sit on the piano with good posture, and connect your body and mind to the piano. Overall, having a sense of awareness of all these techniques is what it takes.

When you build more awareness, the more relaxed you will become when playing. When you’re comfortable, you’ll play faster and stronger. Although it may seem strenuous to pay attention to these small details, these little details will improve you by playing by a milestone. If you’ve ever watched any videos of pro pianists perform, their hands appear to float over the keys. This technique is from years of practicing and paying attention to their technique each time they practice.

It Reduces Your Risk of Injury

If you pay attention to your technique while you practice the piano, it will help reduce your injury risk. For example, if you hold too much tension in your wrists and arms while you play, you could increase carpal tunnel syndrome risk. Any injury that is caused by repetitive motions can slow down your progress.

Since piano playing is like any sport, a great way to avoid any injuries is by warming up beforehand. When athletes show up for their games, they probably never show up and start playing. Usually, athletes show up early to stretch and warm-up before the game to be prepared physically. In the same way, don’t just start playing the piano without warming up!

It Allows You to Learn More Difficult Music

Maintaining an excellent piano technique also allows you to learn and master more challenging music. If you’re interested in developing your accuracy and fluency while playing, have a reliable piano technique will take you to that level. A great way to begin learning more challenging music is by watching a pianist perform with excellent technique. Take some time to observe your favorite piano players’ hands and positions and how they keep constant contact with the piano keys.
If you decide to take the time to practice proper piano technique, people will be able to notice your ability. Even if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing, be confident. In a sense, “fake it until you make it.”

Conclusion

All in all, there is no faking good piano technique. Developing great technique just takes time and determination. We hope we answered your question on “is technique important when playing the piano?” If you’re looking to buy your dream Yamaha piano, we can help you!
