So, do you need natural talent to play the piano? — It’s a myth that has to lead many possible musicians away. Although people feel naturally drawn to music, it does not mean that those who initially don’t feel a natural pull to music can’t become a master in an instrument. But too often, the myths about needing natural talent block people from exploring their creative passions. Here’s why you shouldn’t feel discouraged:

Musical Talent vs. Practice

Of course, having musical talent is essential, but how do you measure music talent? For example, to become physically strong/fit, most people will choose to lift weights, train their muscles, eat the right foods, work out, etc. However, there are some exceptions of people with those unbeatable genes where they barely work out, eat whatever they want, and are still “fit.” In the same way, there may be people who are naturally drawn to an instrument or music, and they are good at it. However, there is a difference between people who put in the hard work and people who don’t- and you can tell. This is where the importance of practice comes in.  Natural musical talent can only take you so far, and you can only rely on it so much. Practice and dedication are what differentiates a good musician from a great musician. So even if you are someone who was born with a natural talent, if you don’t take the time to sharpen your craft, you can never get better. If you’re someone who wasn’t born with natural music talent, then that means that you can certainly practice your way to greatness.

“Practice isn’t the thing you do once you’re good. It’s the thing you do that makes you good.”

Malcolm Gladwell

How To Be Talented

You can only answer the answer to becoming more talented. Is talent the natural skill that is developed after consistent and disciplined practice? Is talent only natural and cannot be taught? While you might not be sure how you perceive talent, the only thing you can be sure of is that developed talent and becoming a fantastic musician only comes from diligent practice and your mindset. If you are naturally drawn towards music, you have half the equation. To become even better, you need to put in the work to develop your talents. While some cool piano hacks you can learn to increase your skills, there are no shortcuts to becoming a skilled pianist. If you want to develop your talent, you must practice; there is no way around it.

The Key To Becoming a Great Piano Player

So we’ve learned that you don’t need a jaw-dropping amount of talent to be a great piano player. All you need is to have a love for your piano, practice diligently, and fix your mindset on your end goal. Really, that’s all it takes to become a great piano player.  It’s essential to keep a healthy balance between music, practice, and also life. To reach that big end goal of yours, whether it be your gig or playing for a friend, you need to set small, reachable goals for yourself. There may be times when you feel discouraged to keep getting better, or you may even feel like you’re not making any progress. But remember, have grace for yourself. Set smaller goals that you can reach every other week. If you change your mindset to patience and hard work, you will be astonished to see your progress.
