If you are an adult piano learner, learning confidence can be challenging regardless of whether you are a beginner or a more advanced pianist. Sitting down to play can bring out all sorts of feelings of anxiety and self-doubt. Although there is no “fix-all” tutorial on becoming confident at your instrument, we have come up with some tips to help you. Here’s how to be confident at playing piano:

Avoid Comparing Yourself to Others

We’ve all done it, and it’s easier said than done. However, you need to understand how comparison is the thief of many things.  Just as every person is unique in their ways, so is every piano player. This means that even your learning journey will look very different from someone else, especially for adults. This is a vast variety of factors that can change the course of your piano playing journey. For example, the amount of practice time you, the instruction you receive, and even the encouragement you get are all factors that vary from person to person. Since all these factors will differ in our lives, it is impossible to compare your progress with your neighbor’s. Instead, we encourage you to take pride in your journey and achievements.

Have a “Growth” Mentality

One of the biggest misconceptions about talented artists is that they were just “born with it.” This could be farther from the truth since the most successful artists got to their ability level from hours of time, patience, and work on their craft. And in fact, you could get there too.  The first step to obtaining the “growth” mentality is understanding that achieving success with your instrument will take time. The second step is to do the work to get there. In a growth mentality, failure is not a bad thing. Instead, just something means you haven’t quite grasped it yet, and you need more practice. And this is okay. Because having a growth mentality means that failing doesn’t mean giving up!

Practice and Do the Work

Like we said, obtaining “talent” in your instrument takes showing up and doing the work. And like many things in life, becoming great at your craft will include many “ups and downs” during the journey. But don’t fret, this is entirely normal!  Not every day is the same. However, if you continue to show up and do the work, there is no doubt that you WILL improve. A great tip we’d like to offer you is to journal or find a way to log your practice and where you are each time you practice. This way, you can look at the last few months, and see how much you have improved. And in turn, your confidence will boost.

Be Very Proud of Yourself

Last but not least, be proud of yourself. Whether you’re picking up the piano after a year or you’re a beginner, you made the step to say “yes” to learning one of the most beautiful instruments in the world. Saying “yes” is something we admire you for, and you should be proud of yourself for beginning your piano journey.
