It’s summertime here in Tennessee, and with the temperature rising, so is the humidity. If you’re a piano owner, it’s essential to know what exactly you need to do to protect your piano in the summer season. Piano’s are very sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity, s it’s important to protect them from those changes as much as possible. Let’s take a look at how to take care of your piano in the summer:

How Humidity Affects Your Piano

Before we begin on how you can take care of your piano this summer, you should know why and how the summertime can affect your piano. As you may know, changes in humidity can affect your piano significantly. Since acoustic pins are made out of wood, the wood tends to expand and contract as the room humidity increases and decreases. As a result, a piano with humidity changes can go out of tune relatively quickly. Even worse, some of the vital wooden parts can crack and may need costly repairs.

How to Take Care Of Your Piano in the Summer

The first step in taking care of your piano is to keep your air conditioning temperature set to a level that you can maintain throughout the summertime. By doing this, you will keep both the temperature and the humidity stable. Want to go the extra mile and purchase a piano humidity control system? You may need a piano humidity control system. But then again, you may not. It’s essential to determine whether a humidity control system is necessary by measuring the humidity levels where your piano is located piano. A good hygrometer will allow you to do that. What is a hygrometer? A hygrometer is an instrument for measuring the humidity of the air or gas. This instrument is reasonably inexpensive, and you can purchase one online or purchase or at your local music shop. Suppose your air conditioning system does not keep your room temperature stable (as determined by your hygrometer). In that case, the next best thing to do is to install a humidity control system in your piano. Besides keeping the humidity and temperature around your piano stable, keeping your piano away from heating vents, air conditioning vents, and windows is also essential. Even the highest-quality pianos will have trouble staying in tune if they are placed in the wrong place. For example, it’s not the best idea to put your piano directly under a window that receives tons of sunlight, near an air vent, or even an uninsulated wall.  We also suggest keeping your piano away from fixtures that affect the room’s temperature, such as an electric heater, fireplace, windows, etc. Blasts of cold air and excessive heat will damage your piano over time. Not only will it cause your piano to go out of tune even faster, but it can crack the soundboard or pin-block, and those aren’t exactly a fun thing to get fixed.
