“Sylvia”

Once the pride of a small church in East Tennessee, Sylvia, a beautiful light walnut Yamaha grand piano, stood proudly in the corner of the sanctuary. Sunlight streamed through the stained-glass windows, casting a golden glow on her polished wood. She had been placed in the church many years ago, and for as long as she could remember, her life had been filled with music.

As well as the happy hymns on Sundays, Sylvia had felt the joy of weddings, the quiet reverence of funerals, and the joyous celebration of baptisms. Sylvia’s music filled the room, and in return, the church filled her with a sense of purpose. She was loved, cared for, and played regularly—sometimes even more often than that.

But over time, the church began to change. Fewer people came. The once-crowded pews grew emptier, and the vibrant voices that had sung along with her in praise began to fade. Slowly, Sylvia’s music quieted too. Her keys still glistened, but fewer hands touched them.

One day, when the church had grown even quieter, a woman walked in. Sylvia recognized her immediately. She was older now, but there was something about her—the same familiar eyes, the same gentle way she moved. The woman had been one of the children who’d come to services with her family many years ago. Sylvia could tell from the look in her eyes that the woman remembered her too.

The woman approached the piano and sat down on the smooth bench, her fingers hesitating for just a moment before they rested on the keys. In that instant, Sylvia felt a spark of joy. She could still feel the music inside her, waiting to be released. It was as if the quiet years had never happened, and she was once again part of something beautiful.

The woman smiled softly, recognition flooding her heart. She wasn’t sure where the journey would lead, but Sylvia could sense that it was the beginning of something new—a second chance for both of them. Without hesitation, the woman decided to take Sylvia with her to a piano store she knew well, hoping to find a new home for the piano that had once been so full of life.

In the piano store, which the woman’s family had once owned and was now in the hands of kind new owners, Sylvia sits quietly, remembering the music of her past each time someone runs their fingers across her keys. Her heart swells with hope that one day, someone will come along, just as the woman had, to fill her with music again. Every note played is a reminder that music never truly fades. It only waits to be rediscovered.
