40+ Years Experience Tuning • Repair • Regulation • Voicing In-House, Full-Time Technician

Joel’s Journey

Joel’s love for piano began as a teenager when he first connected deeply with the instrument through his dreams. Night after night, he heard beautiful compositions in his sleep, only to find them reflected in the Classical Piano records his mother had tucked away in a cupboard. That serendipitous discovery sparked a lifelong relationship with music.

At age 13, Joel began playing piano and immersing himself in the study of classical music. By 25, he added fingerstyle guitar to his repertoire and began teaching both instruments privately.

Originally from Salem, Oregon, Joel began tuning pianos at just 15. After apprenticing with a professional tuner, he got his start servicing floor models at Cascade Piano in Portland. Over the years, he refined his craft, providing expert service for universities, institutions, and families throughout Oregon.

Now based in Nashville, Tennessee, Joel has spent the last decade earning his reputation as one of the area’s most trusted and respected piano technicians.

Before joining our team, Joel owned and operated his own business, Precision Piano Tuning, where he provided piano tuning, repair, concert-level regulation, voicing, and other specialized services for families and institutions across Middle Tennessee.

For many years, we had the pleasure of working with Joel as an independent technician. He regularly tuned pianos for our customers and maintained instruments on our showroom floor. When the time came to expand our service department, Joel was the first person we thought of. His expertise, work ethic, and care for every customer aligned perfectly with our mission to better serve the Nashville music community.

Now, as a full-time member of the Miller Piano Specialists team, Joel is able to focus entirely on what he loves most – caring for pianos – while our broader team supports him behind the scenes. It has been an incredible match, and we are truly grateful to have him with us.

Highlights of Joel’s Career

  • Institutional Expertise: Joel has provided tuning and maintenance services for Fisk University, Martin Methodist College, The University of Tennessee Southern, and other respected institutions.
  • Diverse Musical Influences: His compositions blend classical, American folk, and pop traditions, reflecting his broad musical perspective.

Common Questions

How often should I tune my piano?

In Middle Tennessee, most pianos should be tuned twice per year. If your piano is new, recently moved, heavily played, or in a fluctuating environment, you may benefit from more frequent service.

What is regulation and why does it matter?

Regulation is the set of adjustments that make the action respond evenly. It affects control, repetition, and how easy it is to play softly or quickly.

Can you make my piano less bright (or more bright)?

Often, yes. Voicing can reshape tone within the piano’s natural range. Joel can explain what is realistic for your instrument and goals.

Do you service pianos outside Nashville?

We can discuss options based on your location and the type of service needed. Reach out and we will point you in the right direction!
